From the New York Times — Ben Brantley reviews MACHINAL
Several friends of mine saw this in previews, and came back raving about it. The play, full of expressionist touches, won’t be to everybody’s taste, but I think it’s an extraordinary piece — rarely performed, and absolutely worth knowing. In 1928, for a female American playwright (Sophie Treadwell) to be produced on Broadway was a great rarity… and sadly, even today it’s relatively uncommon. I have very positive memories of an imaginative production done here at Penn by a friend and faculty colleague director.
Brantley’s review of the new production is a touch more reserved than the word-of-mouth I’ve been hearing, but in any case I’m looking forward to seeing it for myself.
