Not sure what to make of NEBRASKA. It’s beautifully done, and I found a lot of it moving, and funny, and depressing — sometimes all at once. The skills I’ve admired in Alexander Payne — an eye for small, quirky human foibles, and a willingness to let scenes play out without too much fussing — are on full display. But something about the movie feels condescending, and I’m put off by the depiction of contemporary Nebraska as a series of dire-circumstance snapshots out of Dorothea Lange. I’ve been to Nebraska, and found it scary in a different way — endless stretches of suburban strip malls — but much of it was solidly middle-class and immaculately maintained.
