As we continue to watch the world of live performance come cautiously back to post-COVID levels, I felt the greatest surge of joy so far when I saw Opera Philadelphia’s announcement of their 2022-23 season—and most especially, the reboot of Festival O.

Beginning in 2017, for four consecutive Septembers this genre-defying celebration brought the company together with other partnering arts organizations in a thrilling series of events that mix traditional opera with new and innovative works. That is, it did… till quarantine shut it down.

This year, it promises to return full-throttle…
